Type Specimen

Role: research, typography, layout design, print design

Time: spring 2019

Client: self

I was tasked with designing and creating a booklet for the Google Font Rubik I used basic skills of publication design, such as setting paragraphs of text and working on a grid to understand the value of typefaces.

Original Typeface

Role: illustration, typography

Time: spring 2019

I was tasked with creating an original typeface. Using Glyphs Mini 2, I created “Full Bloom,” a typeface based on the personality of a professor at the Newhouse School.

CLASSIFICATION: Slab serif

MUSE: Fiona Chew

Concept Statement

Courteous and winsome in class. Professor Chew is often excited about the content she teaches, and those qualities in large part informed the design of Full Bloom, which also honors her passion for gardening — especially peonies! — and the delayed gratification it offers. A tall x-height adds a flair of whimsy and beauty, while thin, delicate strokes reflect Professor Chew’s approachable and friendly demeanor.

Personal Statement

The biggest takeaway from designing a typeface is that it requires a lot of patience. Few things come out perfect the first time you do it, but the more you practice, the better you become at mastering a particular skill. This is one reason I named my typeface Full Bloom — to memorialize the lesson of delayed gratification.
